Millennials were born between 1980 and 2000, and they spend more money online than any other age group. In fact, by 2017, they will likely be spending about $200 billion per year. So if you aren’t already targeting millennials, it’s time to start! But first, you need to know where you can find the young adults who make up this generation. Sure, the general answer is “online” most of the time, but on which websites? Here are some hints to get you started on your digital marketing strategy for targeting millennials.
What Do Millennials Do Online?
So you’re surely aware that millennials, like most people these days, spend several hours online each day. But each age group has its own most popular online activities. For millennials, it’s checking email, according to 72% of those surveyed by The Media Insight Project. So your first lesson should be that email marketing is definitely not dead, especially when you’re marketing to millennials.
The second most popular online activity involves checking up on what friends are doing, since 71% of respondents claimed that’s what they do online. This is probably why social media is so popular, making social media marketing a must when you’re targeting young adults. In particular, Facebook is still the number one social network among people in this age group – or really any age group.
But millennials also like to go online to find out what’s going on in the world, and social networks make that easy since you can find plenty of links to news stories shared by friends and the social networks themselves. For example, one study found that 88% of respondents get their news from Facebook, while 83% check YouTube for news. So it makes sense that another study discovered that 84% of people in the millennial generation follow brands on Facebook and 75% follow brands on YouTube. The next most popular sites that millennials check for news include Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, Reddit, and Tumblr.
How Do Millennials’ Favorite Sites Capture Their Attention?
Once you find out where millennials hang out, you need to know how to get their interest. This is a super sought after generation when it comes to marketers, thanks to the millennials’ spending habits, so you have some competition when it comes to grabbing their attention.
But all you need is some secret info that your competitors might not have, like the fact that 76% of millennials surveyed in one study claimed that their favorite sites have content that is easy to read and comprehend. The same study found that 59% of millennials appreciate great graphics on websites, and that 57% enjoy content that is both concise and well written.
The takeaway is that if you want to capture the interest of millennials, you need to make sure your website or social media page has a good mix of quality content that is easy to read, along with some stunning images or even videos. Then you can work on other important details, like making sure your site is mobile friendly and your content is properly marketed.
