Landing Your First Job in Marketing (Video)

Watch this episode of the Marketing Mash video series featuring Lead Generation Specialist, Shaelyn McCormick. She joins Eric to give tips and insight on what you can do if you want to land a job in marketing.

Whether you’re straight out of college, or looking to switch career paths, there are some recommended steps you should take when you go into an interview for a marketing position. Eric shares examples of what he did when he first started out in marketing, and believes these are still good preparation tactics to use to stand out from your competition:

  • Compile your marketing projects into a portfolio to share with the interviewer.
  • Include any writing samples alongside a portfolio.
  • Bring real life examples of marketing projects you’ve worked on – including college projects.
  • If you don’t have real life examples, create mock campaigns.
  • Get some background on the person you are interviewing with: Search for them on LinkedIn and other social networks and understand what role they play in the company.
  • Go to your interview wearing business attire – don’t come in a t-shirt and jeans!

What Marketing Companies Are Learning About YOU

Eric also shares his perspective from the other side – listing things he and his team look for when searching for candidates to fill a marketing position. Marketing companies will look at your social media history, so be sure it’s cleaned up and appropriate! Shaelyn adds to this by recommending that, if you don’t have one already, you need to get a LinkedIn profile and populate it with all your professional information.

After You’ve Landed a Marketing Job Do This

  • If you’re straight out of college, know that some of the formal marketing aspects you learned will not directly apply to your day-to-day tasks.
  • Learn how to move fast to meet deadlines and expectations.
  • Don’t be afraid to take on a new project.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help so that you can learn more.
  • Continue to learn about trending marketing tools – there are free learning resources everywhere online.
